Sour Grapes

One summer, two drawn out transfer sagas coming to an end. Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the Fab-Four in the Manchester united line-up decided to turn their back on the clubs that made them what they are to look for new challenges. One finally managing to whine his way out of United to follow his childhood dream of playing for the Galacticos. The other managing to shoot his own foot and leaving the English champions for the mediocracy that is called manchester city.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the boy wonder from Madeira. When he first arrived on English shores, he was a scrawny, unknown but highly talented kid from Portugal with big dreams. In his first few years, he showed glimpses of his potential but those moments were mingled with accusations of diving and selfishness. Then came his breakthrough season in 06-07 when he finally rose and started fulfilling his potential. Ronaldo and Rooney combined to hunt and destroy opposition defenses left, right and center. It all culminated with United reclaiming their EPL trophy and Ronaldo being crowned PFA Player of the Year and second runner-up in the World player of the year. The boy was finally fulfilling his potential and becoming the world class player he was destined to become.
Summer of 2007 arrives and Sir Alex adds the Argentine terrier Tevez to the mix. And hence the Holy Trinity was recreated. Never had such an attacking force donned the famous red jersey of ManUtd since the golden days of Best, Charlton and Law. The Audacious skills of Ronaldo, the selfless talent of Rooney and the pure energy of Tevez combined to strike fear in English football. Conquering everything in site, the red devils went on to win the EPL. Ronaldo shattered all goalscoring records to end up with a mind boggling tally of 42 goal. Press went into overdrive comparing Ronny to another United legend - George Best. The fans showed their appreciation singing Viva Ronaldo every second he was on the pitch. Rooney and Tevez often sacrificed their natural game to help the team out. Their fighting spirit and never say die approach to the game made them the fan's favorite. And then came the Magnum Opus, the crowning moment in their united career. 21st May, 2008 - Moscows Luzhniki Stadium. On the 50th anniversary of the munich air disaster, the spirit of the Busby babes lifted the united players to achieve what every united fan craved. European success. Champions of England were now the Champions of Europe.
By now the whispers of unrest had grown. Much to the despair of every united supporter, Ronny openly admitted his desire to play for Real Madrid. And thus started the summer of flirtation and the longest transfer saga ever. One week Ron would say I'm staying at united and the next week he would say that i want to play for Madrid. Meanwhile Tevez was getting insecure about his contract (or the lack of it). To further complicate matters, United signed Berbatov and The holy trinity turned into a Fabulous Four. Fergie convinced Ronaldo to stay with united. But the press speculation continued. Ronaldo kept on saying his heart is now with united and wants to stay with the English champions. The team continued winning while Ronaldo and Tevez continued whining and bitching. The fans implored Fergie to sign Tevez up and Ronaldo to stay with United.
And then the drama worthy of an Ekta Kapoor soap starts to unfold. The major characters - Tevez, Ronaldo, Fergie and Perez. The setting - Champions league final, Rome. United are outclassed by a Barcelona team inspired by their midfield magicians. The knives come out and the same press that was lauding united for their efforts during the season started finding cracks in the united armour. Tevez immediately proclaimed that had he started the game, united would have won. Ron started to criticize Fergie's game plan. And hence the stage was set for the two to part company with united and go their own way. Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid for a staggering 80m pounds. Meanwhile Tevez moved to our bitter rivals Man-City.
So what was the difference between the two transfers? Why are all united fans sad to see Ronaldo go but are mad at Tevez?
  • Ronaldo parted company with united on a mutual agreement. Ronaldo fulfilled his wish of playing for Madrid while united pocketed a cool 80m pounds for their troubles. As opposed to Tevez, who rejected a new contracted with united and moved away.
  • Ronaldo moved abroad whereas Tevez decided to move to United's local rivals.
  • Tevez tried to play the Old Trafford crowd against Fergie in a bid to secure a better deal.
  • Ronaldo was a major factor behind our success in recent years. Tevez was never more than a squad player who thinks too highly of himself.
  • Ever since he has moved away, Ronaldo has said only good things about the club, its fans, its players and the gaffer. He acknowledges the fact that playing at United is one the main reason why he is the best footballer in the world today. On the other hand, Tevez has been acting like airhead. He has been trying to blame the "Godfather" for his exit from united rather than accept that he is just not good enough to hold a regular spot in the united line-up.
My suggestion to Tevez is to his head out of his **** and start using it. Try to get the few brain cells he has working and accept the fact that he is not as good as he thinks he is. I hope he realizes that he has moved over from being the third choice striker at united to being the third choice striker at City. And he should try and take a leaf out of Paul Scholes's book and deflate his giant sized ego and just get on with the game. Who knows, he might be able to cut it at City (though I seriously doubt it). Maybe he should just go back to Argentina. Hey it worked for Veron.
